Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in ReliefWeb Nairobi, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The incumbent reports to the Chief Editor based in the ReliefWeb Section in New York, Information Services Branch, Corporate Programmes Division, OCHA.

 

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Editor will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Manage daily content operations of the ReliefWeb editorial team in Nairobi in coordination with the Chief Editor:
- Assign daily monitoring and posting duties to team members, supervise quality of information selected and metadata assigned, and provide routine support and guidance on editorial and technical issues
- Monitor a wide range of information products (websites, social media, mailing lists) from a variety of sources (international organizations, governments, NGOs, media and academic and research organizations) and select relevant, reliable and timely information
- Add information selected to ReliefWeb content management system and assign correct metadata to ensure appropriate retrieval by users
- Participate in recruitment, training, supervision and mentoring of Nairobi editorial team (General Service staff, on- and off-site contractors, and interns)
- Liaise with other ReliefWeb duty stations to ensure timely and coordinated approach to selection and posting of content
2. Curate and promote ReliefWeb content by developing and maintaining country/disaster profiles to contextualize emergencies, liaising with information providers, selecting and prioritizing content and promoting them through content distribution channels:
- Oversee posting of content related to countries and disasters in assigned portfolio
- Write and update country/disaster profiles to contextualize emergencies
- Liaise with OCHA offices and other organizations in the field to seek advice on coverage and priorities for countries and emergencies
- Liaise with information providers focusing on assigned regions to develop agreements on submission of relevant information
- Select individual reports and events to be highlighted on the homepage, Twitter and Facebook and write/rewrite headlines, tweets and status updates
- Engage with clients via email and on Facebook and Twitter to answer questions, elicit feedback and promote ReliefWeb
- Contribute to ongoing improvements to and development of ReliefWeb’s website, features, services, and tools
3. Develop, document, implement and maintain editorial policies, content management guidelines, standard operating procedures, and outreach strategies:
- Develop and document policies, guidelines, procedures and strategies in web-based editorial manual, monitor implementation and compliance across duty stations and provide guidance and support on their application to team members across
- Update them as necessary to reflect changes in practice, to improve usability and ensure shared understanding by all team members
4. Act as the head of ReliefWeb satellite office:
- Represent ReliefWeb in outreach and other efforts to enhance partnerships
- Contribute to annual planning, mid-year review, for work and resource requirements, and manage resources under his/her responsibility

 

Competencies
PROFESSIONALISM:
- Comprehensive knowledge of, and exposure to, a wide range of humanitarian experiences, emergency relief and related human rights issues;
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and strong research skills;
- Very good knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to humanitarian affairs;
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and formulate clear recommendations and action points;
- Sufficient understanding of the roles of, and first-hand experience from working with, different humanitarian organizations, including non-UN humanitarian organizations;
- Knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines pertaining to humanitarian principles and humanitarian law;
- Sound knowledge of the institutions of the UN system;
- Proficiency in Content Management Systems is desirable.
- Proficiency in application of information management principles and web publication standards, including taxonomy, is desirable.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political or social sciences, international studies, journalism, information management within a humanitarian context or other relevant field is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree.

 

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation or development, human rights, information management, journalism or other related area is required. Experience within OCHA, the UN common system or an international NGO in a humanitarian emergency at the field level is desirable; Experience in the application of web-based information services in a relevant field is desirable.

Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.

 

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

 

Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

 

Special Notice
- Funding for this position is available for at least one year subject to extension.
- Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or availability of funds.
- Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
